Diwali is one festival, where the entire family comes together. It comes on the night of Amavasya (new moon) on the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. People start preparing for Diwali almost a month ago. There is excitement everywhere. People start cleaning and whitewashing their homes and removing unused and unwanted things lying in their houses. They buy new clothes, sweets, crackers, diyas, and other items of decoration. Diwali is a 5-day festival, and each day has its own significance.
Day 1 is celebrated as Dhanteras when people consider it auspicious to buy utensils, jewellery, vehicles, and electronic items. Day 2 is Narak Chaudas, or Roop Chaudas, where people do cosmetic treatments. Day 3 is the main day, where we perform Mahalakshmi Pooja. People light diyas all their house and exchange sweets and wishes. Children enjoy the festival by burning crackers. Day 4 is Govardhan Pooja, where ladies make a figure of Lord Krishna using cow-dung and worship it. People in villages, especially farmers worship their cattle. The last day is Bhai Dooj, where sisters invite their brothers over a meal and cook their favourite dishes. She applies tilak on their forehead and wishes for their success. The brother also promises to protect her and showers her with blessings and gifts.
Across these 5 days, the common thing is lighting the diyas, burning crackers, and exchanging wishes with your near and dear ones. People young or old, celebrate this festival with great pomp and show.
Why is Diwali celebrated?
Though there are many stories associated with why we celebrate Diwali, the main story is linked to Lord Rama, who served an exile of 14 years with his wife, Sita, and brother, Lakshman. It was on this day that he returned to Ayodhya after 14 years. This being an Amavasya, the night was very dark. So, people lit several diyas to make the night bright and express their happiness. The people of Ayodhya welcome their kind by lighting a row of diyas. Since then, Deepawali (deep + awali) meaning ‘row of diyas’, became popular as a festival of lights. People lit innumerable diyas and illuminate the night.
