Dussehra is one such festival that embodies the timeless belief that truth always prevails over evil. Celebrated 20 days before Diwali, during the Hindu month of Ashvin, it reminds us that darkness can never eclipse light, and ignorance can never defeat knowledge. The festival encourages us to walk the path of ‘dharma’ (righteousness), shedding negative qualities like jealousy, hatred, and laziness, while filling our hearts with love and compassion. It also inspires us to remain active and purposeful in life.
Dussehra commemorates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Raavan, who had kidnapped Sita and held her captive in Lanka.
Dussehra in various parts of India:
Dussehra follows immediately after the Navratri celebrations in the month of Ashvin. Navratri is observed twice a year—once in the summer, known as ‘Chaitra Navratri,’ and again in autumn, called ‘Ashvin Navratri.’ During the Ashvin Navratri, people in western and central India engage in Garba and Dandiya dances, honoring Goddess Durga. At the same time, in eastern and northeastern India, Durga Puja is celebrated, where devotees worship Goddess Kali, a powerful form of Durga, and install her grand idols in elaborately decorated pandals.
In northern India, the nine days of Navratri are marked by performances of ‘Ramleela,’ where scenes from Lord Rama’s life, as told in the Ramayana, are enacted on temporary stages, bringing to life the epic story of the Hindu faith.
After the nine days of Navratri, the tenth day is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijayadashami. In Bengal, it is known as ‘Bijoya Dashami.’ While people in eastern and northeastern India immerse the idols of Goddess Kali to mark the end of the festivities, in other parts of the country, devotees visit temples in the morning and attend local fairs in the evening. A highlight of these fairs is the burning of large effigies of Raavan, his brother Kumbhkaran, and his eldest son Meghnaad (also called Indrajeet, for defeating Lord Indra, the king of the gods), symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
In the eastern parts of India, where Durga Puja is celebrated, Vijayadashami is marked by a grand procession where the idols of Goddess Durga are taken through the streets. People sing, dance, chant Vedic mantras, and throw gulaal (colored powders) at one another in joyous celebration. This vibrant event culminates in the immersion of the idols in water, known as ‘visarjan,’ which signifies the conclusion of the festival.
Following the immersion, people visit friends, family, and relatives. Younger children traditionally greet their elders by touching their feet to seek blessings. Those of the same age embrace each other, exchange sweets, and share heartfelt wishes for Dussehra, fostering a spirit of love and community.
